Katie Hopkins is known for her controversial views and comments. But this time she may have gone too far as her column that is published in the Sun newspaper has led to her and the newspaper’s editor, David Dinsmore being reported to the Metropolitan police for incitement of racial hatred.

In her 17th April column Hopkins wrote that migrants desperate to reach Britain following humanitarian disasters in their own countries, were cockroaches and said the government should send gunships to stop them getting to the shore. 

The comments have sparked anger with a complaint being made by the Society of Black Lawyers to Bernard Hogan Howe the Metropolitan Police Commissioners.

Part of the complaint wrote, “The recent comments by the Sun journalist Katie Hopkins, authorised for publication by her Editor and senior staff,  are sadly some of the most offensive, xenophobic and racist comments I have read in a British newspaper for some years. These comments comparing the African migrants fleeing Libya to “cockroaches” , almost certainly all “trafficked” persons facing intimidation, violence and extortion at the point of departure represent some of the most vulnerable people in international law at the present time.”

Following Hopkins comments an online petition calling for the Sun to sack her reached more than 200,000 and the Independent Press Standard Organisation says it received more than 100 complaints about the controversial article.

This isn't the first time Hopkins has courted controversy and been reported to the police for her comments. Her remarks on twitter about Palestinians being filthy rodents were met with much anger with many wanting her to be prosecuted for her remarks.

A spokesperson for the popular tabloid has said, “The Sun has not received any communication from either the Met or the ICC.”

Hopkins herself has made no comment about the petition or complaint made to the police.

Russia starts controlling banking operations involving 41 countries — media

Russia’s financial watchdog, Rosfinmonitoring, is introducing control over banking operations involving 41 countries, the Izvestia newspaper reported on Monday, citing the respective letter of the federal service.

The banks are to immediately inform the Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring) about the operations of their clients, both individuals and companies, who are the residents of the US, Canada, the EU (28 countries), Australia, Norway, Iran, Syria, Sudan, New Zealand, Argentina, Mexico, Switzerland, North Korea and Jamaica.

If a bank neglects the demand, then its actions will be regarded as the violation of the Russian federal law "On Countering Legalization (Laundering) of Proceeds of Crime and Financing of Terrorism."

Russian military breaks Crimea water blockade

Russian Defence Ministry units have fully restored the supply of fresh water to south-eastern Crimea. The area experienced water shortages after Kiev shut off the supply of water from the Dnieper River via the North Crimean Canal, a source meeting up to 85% of the peninsula’s demand for fresh water.

"Every 24 hours, the pipeline network pumps more than 20,000 cubic meters of water," Bulgakov said. "The pipes were first laid to reach the North Crimean Canal, which allows to fully supply with fresh water [the cities of] Kerch, Feodosia and Sudak."

The work involved about 500 service members and 200 units of military and special equipment.

In addition to that, field pipelines leading to the peninsula’s artesian wells have been deployed with a total length of more than 125 kilometers.

Scientists are developing a new treatment known as 'green chemoprevention' in which broccoli and other vegetables are used to prevent the disease.

They explained that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and garden cress have a high concentration of sulforaphane – which is why they have a slightly bitter taste.

Previous studies, including large-scale trials in China, have shown sulforaphane helps 'undo' the effects of cancer-causing agents in the environment.
