Golden Rules to Live by from the Holy Quran
Gender, race, color, lineage etc are no criteria for superiority
O mankind! Lo! We have created you from a male and a female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! The noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware. (49:13)
Be just in all matters, even if it is against your relatives
And approach not the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better, till he reach maturity. Give full measure and full weight, in justice. We task not any soul beyond its scope. And if ye give your word, do justice thereunto, even though it be (against) a kinsman; and fulfill the covenant of Allah. This He commands you that haply ye may remember.(6:152)
Talk straight, to the point, without any ambiguity
O ye who believe! Guard your duty to Allah, and speak words straight to the point; (33:70)
Do not shout. Speak politely keeping your voice low
And be moderate in thy pace, and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass. (31:19)
Do not mix truth with falsehood
Confound not truth with falsehood, nor knowingly conceal the truth. (2:42)
Do not be contemptuous, proud or a bragging boaster
Do not turn your cheek in scorn away from people, nor walk proudly on the earth; Allah does not love the proud and the boastful. (31:18)
Do not talk, listen or do anything vain
And when they hear vanity they withdraw from it and say: Unto us our works and unto you your works. Peace be unto you! We desire not the ignorant. (28:55)
If you pass near a futile play, then pass by with dignity
And those who will not witness vanity, but when they pass near senseless play, pass by with dignity. (25:72)
Don’t be miserly. Control your anger and pardon people’s faults gracefully
Those who spend (of that which Allah has given them) in ease and in adversity, those who control their wrath and are forgiving toward mankind; Allah loves the good; (3:134)
Walk with humility and sedateness
And the servants of (Allah) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, "Peace!"; (25:63)
Keep your gazes lowered devoid of any lecherous leers and salacious stares
Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and be modest. That is purer for them. Lo! Allah is aware of what they do. (24:30)
Don’t speak about that of which you do not have complete knowledge. It has grave consequences even if you may think otherwise
When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great. And why did ye not, when ye heard it, say? - "It is not right of us to speak of this: Glory to Allah! This is a most serious slander!" (24:15-16)
Consider others innocent until they are proven guilty with solid and truthful evidence
Why did not the believers, men and women, when ye heard it, think good of their own folk, and say: It is a manifest untruth? (24:12)
Ascertain the truth of any news, lest you smite someone in ignorance and afterwards repent of what you did
O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest ye harm people unwittingly and afterwards become full of repentance for what ye have done. (49:6)
Verify information yourself using your faculties of perceptions and understanding
(O man), follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! The hearing and the sight and the heart - of each of these it will be asked. (17:36)
Be humble about your finite level of knowledge and experience
…We raise to degrees (of wisdom) whom We please: but over all endued with knowledge is one, the All-Knowing. (12:76)
Live like members of one family, brothers and sisters unto one another
The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy. (49:10)
Do not make mockery of others or ridicule and defame others. Also, do not insult other by nicknames
O you who believe, let not a people ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you mock one another, or call each other names. Evil indeed is the reversion to wickedness after attaining faith. And anyone who does not repent, then these are the transgressors. (49:11)
Avoid spying, suspicion and guesswork. Also, do not backbite one another
O ye who believe! Shun much suspicion; for lo! Some suspicion is a crime. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Ye abhor that (so abhor the other)! And keep your duty (to Allah). Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful. (49:12)
When you meet each other, take care to be polite
When a greeting is offered you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or (at least) of equal courtesy. Allah takes careful account of all things. (4:86)
Do not enter houses other than your own until you have sought permission; and then greet the inmates courteously
O ye who believe! Enter not houses other than your own without first announcing your presence and invoking peace upon the folk thereof. That is better for you, that ye may be heedful (24:27)
Treat people kindly, be they known to you or be they strangers. Be nice people who work under your care
Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess: For Allah loves not the arrogant, the vainglorious;- (4:36)
Do not follow up what you have given to others to afflict them with reminders of your generosity
Those who spend their substance in the cause of Allah, and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, for them their reward is with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. (2:262)
Do not expect a return for your good behavior, not even thanks
(Saying): We feed you, for the sake of Allah only. We wish for no reward nor thanks from you; (76:9)
Cooperate with one another in good deeds and do not cooperate with others in evil and bad matters
…And cooperate in righteousness and warding off (evil), and do not cooperate in sinfulness and transgression. Have fear of Allah, for Allah is Stern in retribution. (5:2)
Do not try to impress people on account of self-proclaimed virtues
Those who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences - (for them) Lo! Your Lord is of vast mercy. He is Best Aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefore ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is Best Aware of him who wards off (evil). (53:32)
Mend your own ways first, before preaching to others
Would you order righteousness on others and forget it yourselves? Yet you recite the Book, have you no sense? (2:44)
Pardon gracefully if anyone among you who commits a bad deed out of ignorance, and then repents and amends
When those who believe in Our verses come to you, say: 'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed Mercy on Himself, if any one of you commits evil through ignorance, and then repents, and mends his ways, then He is Forgiving, the Most Merciful. ' (6:54)
Call people to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful exhortation. Reason with them most decently
Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and fair exhortation, and reason with them in the better way. Lo! Thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strays from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who go aright. (16:125)
Sit not in the company of those who ridicule Divine Law unless they engage in some other conversation
Already has He sent you Word in the Book, that when ye hear the signs of Allah held in defiance and ridicule, ye are not to sit with them unless they turn to a different theme: if ye did, ye would be like them. For Allah will collect the hypocrites and those who defy faith - all in Hell: (4:140)
Do not be jealous of those who are blessed
Or do they envy mankind for what Allah hath given them of his bounty? But We had already given the people of Abraham the Book and Wisdom, and conferred upon them a great kingdom. (4:54)
Eat and drink (what is lawful) in moderation
O Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah loves not the wasters. (7:31)
Do not squander your wealth senselessly
And render to the kindred their due rights, as (also) to those in want, and to the wayfarer: But squander not (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. (17:26)
Dress-up in agreeable attire and adorn yourself with exquisite character from inside out
O ye Children of Adam! We have bestowed garments upon you to cover your nakedness, as well as to be an adornment to you. But the garment of righteousness - that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition! (7:26)
Do not devour the wealth and property of others unjustly, nor bribe the officials or the judges to deprive others of their possessions
And eat not up your property among yourselves in vanity, nor seek by it to gain the hearing of the judges that ye may knowingly devour a portion of the property of others wrongfully. (2:188)
